Up until Nicholas was 11 months old, I made all his food from scratch. Then, I tried some organic pouches and jars for when we’re on the go and… He hated them. I guess I’m doomed to make baby food until he can eat what we eat. Come on, molars! 🙂
Thankfully, I know how to make super nutritious baby food in a pinch! Here’s one of my favorite recipes, and yes, it’s a purée. Baby Nicholas likes to feed himself but I don’t think babies can get adequate nutrition from just finger food. Because of that, I give him finger food in his high chair, but spoon feed him as well.
Nourishing Sweet Potato Purée for Babies
Ingredients
– 1 small sweet potato, baked until soft (to yield 1 cup, mashed)
– 2 egg yolks, raw, from pastured hens
– 1 teaspoon coconut oil
– 1 teaspoon high vitamin butter oil, or pastured ghee
– 1 teaspoon dulse flakes
– 1-2 teaspoons sauerkraut juice (from a jar of sauerkraut)
Directions
In a food processor, blend the sweet potato with the other ingredients. This will feed your 8 months old baby for about 2 meals.
Before serving, scoop out a portion in a small saucepan and heat it, stirring often, until the purée is hot enough to have cooked the egg yolks. Keep leftovers in the fridge for 24 hours.
Nicholas likes to finger food raw cheese and pieces of sauerkraut while I spoon feed him. Steamed vegetables are also a good choice.
Really useful article. I was a bit worried about my baby’s food and after reading this article, I think I learned how to prepare a delicious recipe for my little baby. I am going to try this one tomorrow.
Thank You!
